Indeed, it stands as a monument to everything they’ve achieved in their short time as a band, from whispered-about unknowns, to enigmatic underground icons, to legitimate viral sensations with hundreds of thousands of TikTok videos using their music. Monument sees them return as conquering heroes, expanding on the minimalist greatness of S Krysh Nashikh Domov and Etazhi to fully realize a more maximalist vision of their crystalline post-punk sound. Written and recorded while the band was quarantined in their hometown of Minsk during the COVID-19 pandemic, Monument is a conscious step up in songwriting and fidelity, and it reveals a band preternaturally comfortable in its own skin. Whether playing to the dancefloor, as they do on the synthpop anthem “Discoteque,” or working more introspectively on pre-pandemic live favorites “Otveta Net” and “Ne Smeshno,” Molchat Doma are in complete control. Their greatest strength has always been their songwriting, and they’ve only gotten better.As the band’s arrangements have grown more sophisticated, so too have the sounds they use to bring them to life. Roman Komogortsev and Pavel Kozlov’s gear arsenal has grown to include an extensive range of synthesizers and drum machines, all of which they deploy with precision. Egor Shkutko’s vocals move fluidly between his familiar deadpan monotone and an expressive croon, his beautifully delivered Russian lyrics at turns bleak and romantic. Shkutko has often been compared to Ian Curtis, but here, he outgrows the comparison. With Monument, Molchat Doma have done one of the hardest things to do as a band. They’ve greatly expanded the scope of their music while retaining everything that made them great in the first place.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0707/6839/4562/products/molchat-doma-monument-egg-drop-vinyl-639519.jpg?v=1780441220
cold-gawd-god-get-me-the-fuck-out-of-here-red-smash-vinyl
Cold Gawd: God Get Me The Fuck Out Of Here: Red Smash Vinyl

Black/Red Smash Vinyl (Ltd Ed of 300)

Cold Gawd is the flag under which California-based multi-instrumentalist Matt Wainwright creates stormy, wounded shoegaze music born of open tunings and R&amp, B melodies. It's a blessing because Gosling and his partner, Zach Shields, undoubtedly got more attention for their self-titled debut album than they would have otherwise, and something of a curse because it may not be seen for as genuine a project as it is. Shields and Gosling originally conceived of Dead Man's Bones as a horror-themed musical, but kept the songs they had written when they realized putting on a stage production would be too expensive. Despite the high concept, Dead Man's Bones are pretty far from a vanity project -- if anything, they're the opposite, with Gosling and Shields stretching far from their comfort zones at almost every turn. They played instruments they'd never touched before making the album, and brought in the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children's Choir to add young voices to their virtually untrained ones. They also set rules for themselves while recording: no electric guitars or click tracks were allowed, and they could only do three takes for any given part. All of this gives Dead Man's Bones the feeling -- in the best possible way -- of a bootleg recording of an elaborate grade-school Halloween pageant. By embracing their amateurism so completely, Gosling and Shields turn any weaknesses into strengths, and while influences ranging from the Arcade Fire and Beirut to Roy Orbison to the Langley Schools Music Project to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride can be heard, the way Dead Man's Bones combine them is unique. Over the course of the album, the duo covers an array of moods and sounds that more experienced musicians would be glad to express. These songs range from gentle ("Dead Hearts"' spectral folk) to dark and driving ("Lose Your Soul") to fiery (the Nick Cave-esque "Dead Man's Bones"), and sometimes all at once. Some of the most striking tracks mix jubilant music with images of death -- or undeath, in the case of "My Body's a Zombie for You," where the kids can't help but shout out the chorus as Gosling croons like a zombie-fied '50s teen idol. Dead Man's Bones also do a fine job of balancing the campy and spiritual aspects of a concept album about love, death, and undeath. "In the Room Where You Sleep" is gleefully terrifying; "Young & Tragic," the only song the Silverlake Conservatory kids sing on their own, uses their delicate, flawed voices to express something deeper. Throughout it all, there is a "hey, kids, let's put on a show!" exuberance that makes the album all the more winning. Dead Man's Bones isn't perfect, but it's often fascinating and nearly always charming -- and Shields and Gosling wouldn't have it any other way.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0707/6839/4562/products/dead-mans-bones-st-2xlp-black-vinyl-978614.jpg?v=1780471840
joy-division-still-2lp-180g-black-vinyl
Joy Division: Still: 2LP 180g Black Vinyl

180g Black Vinyl w/ Debossed Gatefold Jacket

Still collects outtakes and rarities along with a live set recorded on May 2, 1980, just over two weeks prior to Ian Curtis' death. Bands such as Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Swing Kids, Clikitat Ikatowi and Mohinder are good reference points, but Angel Hair had a unique intensity that not even their West Coast peers could match.” After many changes the lineup solidified in early 1994, issuing a split 7" EP with Bare Minimum on Titanic Records, and touring the west coast. The lineup included guitarists Andy Arahood (Red Sparowes) and Josh Hughes (The VSS, Pleasure Forever, Rabbits, SSOLD), bassist Todd Corbett (Stiffwhiff), drummer Paul Iannacito (Generalissimo), and vocalist Sonny Kay (The VSS, Year Future, Gold Standard Labs). During that tour, they recorded the 4-song Gravity EP with Matt Anderson in Chula Vista, which was released in time for a six week summer tour around the US in 1994. In that time they also released a split EP with The Fisticuffs Bluff on Unleaded Records. In the fall of '94, they traveled to San Diego again to record the "Insect Mortality" 12" which was released on Gravity in May 1995, four months after Angel Hair had broken up. Drummer Paul Iannacito moved away abruptly following a west coast tour over Christmas, and the band, feeling he was irreplaceable, called it quits after a little more than two years. During this time, they toured with peers such as Monsula, Clikatat Ikatowi, Spitboy, Garden Variety, J Church, Bare Minimum, Antioch Arrow, the Yah Mos, the Fucking Angels and the Vicious Ginks.

The band explains of the release: “‘Insect Immortality’ combines nearly all our previous releases, certainly all the ones worth hearing. Most, however, were recorded by Gravity's Matt Anderson in San Diego in a variety of DIY spaces and setups, none of which would qualify as a studio per se. They were recorded quickly, mixed immediately, and often available on tour less than 2 months later. It was an incredible time in our lives and those recordings really do capture the energy and momentum of what we were creating. But three decades later, after our ears and minds have evolved along with technology, it became evident at some point that all the music we released could be made to sound much better. Thanks to Matt's foresight and diligence, obtaining the original masters wasn't difficult. We handed them over to Pete Lyman, a giant in the mastering world, and our old chum from Boulder, present at the first and last Angel Hair shows and many in between. Pete remixed the tracks from our 12" and most of the EP's from the ground up, and the difference is huge. These songs have never sounded so intense and everyone in the band is very well represented.”

“Angel Hair's music has a certain unforgettable quality that places it in the canon of hardcore classics... Early standout, “Final Feather”, drifts through varying landscapes of airiness and haze on a high-neck bass hook, while the hum of voices adds a contrast of angelic comfort. Bearing influence from New Order and The Cure in particular, its balance of gravitas and shimmer is the result of founding member Johnathon Ford’s intuitive writing method: the lead bass line comes first, followed by supporting melodies, drums, guitars, keys, and final detailing.

“Dusty” is a prime example of this process, as Ford’s powerful, low-end groove anchors a full-spectrum array of guitars, bells, and arpeggiations along with Matt Putman’s energetic drum section. This album, a combination of EPs is a declaration. It’s like the band took everything that was ever great about post-punk, new wave, and shoegaze and smashed it all together, yet somehow came out sounding fresh, urgent, and dangerously alive. The shimmering guitars and languid basslines swirl in and out, creating this thick, intoxicating atmosphere that makes you want to dive deeper into the murk but also leaves you gasping for air.

The vocals are equal parts ethereal and gritty—softly crooning, yet laden with desperation. They balance somewhere between hope and despair, almost like the singer is talking you down from the edge of a nervous breakdown. And just when you think you’ve pinned the band down, Facades hits you with a groove that’s suddenly danceable, only to drag you back into darker waters. It’s a record that doesn’t do anything easy, and that’s what makes it remarkable. We question a number of things but why some dwell on the past usually isn’t one of them. Film and television have a love affair with the past, but so does music. Now while the Nashville by way of Philadelphia’s Palm Ghosts has gone through a variety of shifting membership – settling in with its multi-instrumentalist vocalist Joseph Lekkas, drummer Walt Epting, and guitarist/vocalist Benjamin Douglas – the band isn’t stuck in the past, it lingers throughout it, grasping at elements, blending it into the sound it creates. Its latest release, I Love You, Burn In Hell (Sweet Cheetah / Poptek / Sell The Heart Records/Engineer Records) marks the fruition of that combination.

Throughout the past decade, the band has honed its skill, combining a wide array of textures into post-punk riffing, wrapped around electronic tones. Through its seventh album, nothing has changed, save for its maturation. Through I Love You, Burn In Hell, the band moves in a number of ways, through songs working through the band’s strengths. But in all honesty, there’s nary a point of weakness. Beginning with keyboard washes, the gloomy “Tilt” moves with a goth-like intensity, and singer Joseph Lekkas’ voice is awash through an array of effects that leads the band through darkness. But there’s more than a glimmer of hope through “Drag,” the band’s direct approach, brightly lit with possibly its catchiest song yet. The track is sensational in its pop delivery with an infectious melody that’s sure to stop everyone in their tracks. Guitars wind around the track while the rhythm allows Lekkas and Douglas to run vocal melodies around it from beginning to end.

But it’s “Machine Language” that offers nostalgic goosebumps, as if it’s right out of the soundtrack for Out Of Bounds, you remember, that 1986 Michael Anthony Hall film? But those same feelings lie through “Catherine Shackles,” but I’ll spare you the film soundtrack it would be comfortable and fitting within. Given the preconceptions about the rigidity of harDCore, it's worth remembering the diversity here, and the adaptability as well. Zach Barocas, famed drummer for Jawbox, has enlisted a host of players for another record as New Freedom Sound. The music within the grooves is transcendent, broad-minded, and a testament to the skills of the instrumentalists on this release, musicians with lots of connections to lots of D.C.-area projects. Two Freedoms offers up two extended examples of how music can break through genre restrictions while showing the power and adaptability of a host of those most closely associated with the best music this city continues to offer.

"Fourteenth Freedom" opens with interplay between Gordon Withers' cello and vocals from Janet Morgan (Channels). The piece unfolds with a sense of gentle urgency, that cello giving space to viola from Erica Kane. Soon, cornet, and then sax from Mark Cisneros (Hammered Hulls, Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds, Des Demonas, Deathfix, etc.) are sharing space with Lenny Young's oboe and percussive accentuation from Barocas. There's a sonic similarity here to some recent efforts from Angel Bat Dawid, though Barocas and his ensemble are not strictly limiting themselves to jazz idioms. There is repitition, with the voices working up a sort of John Adams-ish fervor around the space where the instrumentalists jostle and spar. There are moments for contemplation amid the sounds, and others where the energy overtakes all. Faint piano from J. Robbins (Jawbox, Office of Future Plans, Channels) punctuates the sonic maelstrom before resolution is achieved.

"Twelfth Freedom" opens with Gordon Withers' cello staking a path forward. Horns from Lenny Young and Mark Cisneros provide bursts of force against the yearning strings. The figures of the oboe and vocals repeat while flute from Cisneros briefly responds. Insistent percussion from Barocas leads the ensemble onward as the horns continue their questioning around the main musical hook. On this piece, Barocas seems to be driving the tune, after the other players have circled around it. Compared to "Fourteenth Freedom", this number is certainly more percussive. Finally, Viol da Gamba from Amy Domingues (Garland of Hours) adds a new flavor to this music, with those warm tones and those of Withers' cello carrying this piece to a contemplative end.

This is big music. I admire the ambition of Barocas as a band leader, and I dig the sense of freedom here to expand composition and form in ways that are not entirely beholden to the expectations of jazz, or ambient, or post-rock, or new classical -- though this has connections to each. The concept of repitition is what fuels the momentum here, almost like a mantra being repeated. The enlightenment comes from a focus on the central idea of each composition, even as multiple instrumentalists add variations of the melody, or boldly put their mark on it as it moves forward. That push-and-pull between the precision of one set of players and the fire of another is what gives this so much focused energy. Even in the space of one piece, a musician who anchored the start may end up the catalyst for change later. That repitition becomes the anchor, the factor which holds this together as the musicians each individually explore their own paths, even while constrained by the structure of the ensemble."

-A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0707/6839/4562/files/zach-barocas-new-freedom-sound-two-freedoms-limited-edition-vinyl-lp-894104.jpg?v=1745565103
unwed-sailor-cruel-entertainment-neon-pink-vinyl-lp
Unwed Sailor: Cruel Entertainment: Neon Pink Vinyl LP

Neon Pink Vinyl LP

For their tenth LP in a career spanning more than two decades, Tulsa’s Unwed Sailor deliver their heaviest riffs, loudest squalls, and most deeply textured arrangements yet. Cruel Entertainment is a catalogue of contrasts – dissonance and harmony, hardcore crunch and post-rock grandeur, complexity and catchiness – that adds a vibrant new dimension to the second phase of their discography, spanning thus far from 2019’s landmark Heavy Age up to the “vivid, starry-eyed psychedelia” (AllMusic) of 2024’s Underwater Over There. Opener and lead single, “Rock Candy”, roars in with a gale of feedback, pounding drums, and nimble bass, until a latticework of howling guitars ushers us into a more goth-tinged space. It’s a characteristically intricate, energetic composition that flows with remarkable ease between its parts, and wastes not a moment of its three minutes. “Slab City” rolls on an assured, upbeat groove, shifting between tambourine-accented acoustic strumming and sparkling harmonies that spread out across the stereo field. As always, lead songwriter Johnathon Ford’s bass performance provides the bedrock, alternately growling in the depths and buzzing with lively finesse in the upper register. “Monster Collecting” brings a rare combination of melancholic and driving energy, reminiscent of avowed heroes New Order, but ups the ante with a tight, fast-paced rhythm section and litany of guitar lines, until opening up into a cascade of reverberating textures and tenuous sweetness. “Love Zoo” highlights the inventive drumming of Matt Putman, who creates negative space in his patterns to interlock with guitarist David Swatzell’s stacked, dextrous melodies. Here, the band shines as a truly well-oiled machine, swelling and receding in unison, and situating every part in its right place, down to the otherworldly electronic flourishes that adorn the backdrop. According to Ford, the title Cruel Entertainment refers to “the hardships of being an artist and musician in the crowded, imbalanced world of social media and streaming,” where the completion of a new work demands that the creator also be a promoter, content strategist, and agent, among many other intensifying challenges. Pointedly drawing inspiration from noisier, rowdier bands – including Fugazi, Quicksand, and Cherubs – here they seek a much-needed catharsis in the ongoing fight to keep the creative soul intact. Second side standout, “Monty Donahue”, typifies this form of release, as massive, mid-tempo percussion leads a fluid low end theme – inspired by the dual bass assault of Dianogah – and Swatzell’s chords burst into shimmering nebulas across a labyrinthine arrangement that’s equally loud and beautiful. Title track, “Cruel Entertainment”, is a mosaic of sound for which Ford’s bass provides the mortar: taut drums list between the channels, washes of guitar stretch to the horizon, and metallic heaviness punctuates the drift. There is a confident immensity here, proving that, although Unwed Sailor have witnessed a wild amount of changes in the music industry, their knack for creating complex, vital, and masterfully produced work remains untouched.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0707/6839/4562/files/unwed-sailor-cruel-entertainment-neon-pink-vinyl-lp-423443.jpg?v=1746765992
the-jesus-and-mary-chain-psychocandy-2025-reissue
The Jesus and Mary Chain: Psychocandy: 2025 Reissue

2025 Reissue on Black Vinyl

1985: As the last detached murmurs of post-punk slowly crest into the earliest whispers of shoegaze, standing there in a world all their own, cutting a profile both unique and incomparable is the Jesus and Mary Chain.
