Before Morella's Forest became one of the defining voices of the Tooth & Nail Records roster, before Superdeluxe and the mid-90s fell hard for their brand of hazy, melody-drenched noise pop, there was Bozur.
Recorded in 1993 by a group of old friends in Dayton, Ohio, Bozur is the earliest document of what Morella's Forest would become. The origin story is a good one: after discovering a shared love of British shoegaze and deciding they needed a female vocalist, guitarist Sean McCorkle hung a flyer at a local record store. Sydney Rentz answered. What followed was one of the more quietly remarkable stories in the American indie underground of the 1990s.
The four songs captured here, Tranquility, Ethel Stanesbury, Black Mercury, and Room, were tracked with friend Chris Siever on an 8-track, with the patience and care of someone who believed in what was happening in that room. The performances are raw, the sonics are unapologetically noisy, and the whole thing crackles with the energy of a band still discovering what it could be. Notably, Bozur is the only Morella's Forest release on which Sean McCorkle played guitar: original bassist John Wullenweber handles low-end duties here before his departure prompted Sean to pick up the bass for everything that followed.
This is where it started.
Now officially reissued for the first time on CD (limited to 100 copies, housed in an eco-wallet and packaged in a resealable outer bag), Bozur has been restored from the original demo tape and remastered for 2026 by Chris Colbert (who also co-produced Superdeluxe), bringing these recordings back to life from source material provided by Dave Palmer of Pop Vox Records. New packaging design by Cameron George.
